Since Sympatex was founded around 30 years ago, the world population has grown by 50%. At the same time, humankind has increased the use of the Earth’s resources to 1.5 times of the regeneration capability of our planet. Currently, we are using the resources of our children’s generation – and we will leave them growing mountains of waste.
Therefore, it is our aim to do not only what is legally necessary but what is technically possible in order to contribute so that the textile industry can close the ecological cycle as soon as possible. Through our own development and a close dialogue with our customers, we would like to create a clothing industry that combines high individual demands with the uncompromising responsibility for the coming generations.
We believe that this doesn’t have to be a contradiction. At the same time, we think that it is not enough to only optimise certain aspects like durability. For us, it is the highest degree of freedom to commit ourselves voluntarily to reach an aim to the best of our ability: closing the loop. We invite our customers to join us in reaching this common aim.
Sympatex keeps expanding its commitment to sustainable and ecological activities. As a longtime bluesign® system partner, Sympatex meets the strictest guidelines worldwide regarding its production processes when it comes to the protection of the environment, health and production safety. We also try to promote textile developments that can become part of the cycle again as reusable material.

The Sympatex membrane is “guaranteed green”, which means 100% recyclable like a PET bottle. It is made of polyether/ester, a compound of polyester and polyether molecules that represents no health hazard. It is PTFE-free and PFC-free and therefore absolutely environmentally friendly and skin-friendly.
Unlike other membranes, the Sympatex membrane is completely free of PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene). The production, the landfilling and the combustion can create compounds that are ecologically harmful. PTFE has been criticised increasingly in recent years, because the fluorine compounds that are used for producing PTFE are suspected to be harmful. Per- and polyfluorinated compounds can also be released into the environment during the burning or depositing of PTFE. There, they can accumulate due to their long-life cycle.
Due to different customer demands and range of services by the test labels, we take part in varied certifications. Generally, there is a difference between the pollutant lists on the product that have to be checked – Restricted Substances Lists (RSL) – and the pollutant lists of the required components during the production process: Manufacturing RSL (mRSL).
While the Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 only provides tests on the finished product (RSL), the pollutant list of ZDHC focuses completely on the supply chain and therefore on all chemicals that are used in the production process (mRSL). The bluesign® pollutant list (BSSL) is a RSL with consumer safety limits. Due to the comprehensive approach, the dangerous substances in the products as well as all relevant exposure scenarios are defined, and limits for chemicals are set.
The certifications contain the tests for different pollutants while different limits are used. In the following test labels, you will find our current certification numbers as well as the respective pollutant lists.
In general, Sympatex would like to refrain from confirming customer-specific mRSLs and RSLs.
Due to the multitude of legal regulations that Sympatex follows and also surpasses with certifications and due to the argumentation of the ChemSec article setting up an RSL, Sympatex aims to guarantee strict production conditions that are as consistent as possible.
Should it be unclear whether a substance of your customer-specific m/RSL is dangerous, you can test it with the help of the ChemSec tool Textileguide.
Sympatex Technologies is a founding member of the test and certification system Oeko-Tex® Standard 100. Textile products are tested for possible pollutants following strict rules. The Sympatex membrane is certified with Oeko-Tex® Standard 100, product class 1, and can therefore be used in the medical sector as well as for babies and small children.
Sympatex laminates and seam sealing tapes are certified with Oeko-Tex® Standard 100, product class 2. So they can be used in areas with direct skin contact like underwear, bed linen as well as running and bike wear.
With the Oeko-Tex® certifications, the compliance with the European chemicals regulation REACH can be tested and confirmed.
Here you can enter the following certification numbers and check the validity of the Sympatex products.
As a certified bluesign® system partner, Sympatex meets the strict guidelines for the protection of the environment, health as well as safety and stands for a production chain at a high and ecofriendly level. On demand, you will receive here the bluesign® certificate for the Sympatex membrane. The bluesign® certified laminates of Sympatex are available on the bluesign®-bluefinder. The current bluesign® pollutant list BSSL is available here.
ZDHC stands for “Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals”. It is an industry forum that was founded by internationally leading brands, and it aims at completely eliminating the discharge of dangerous chemicals into the waste water by 2020. In the meantime, the Partnership for Sustainable Textiles has adopted the pollutant list of the ZDHC. As a member of the Partnership for Sustainable Textiles, Sympatex has committed itself to supervising the complete supply chain with the help of the mRSL of the ZDHC. You will find all the information about this on the ZDHC website.
With Bionic-Finish® Eco, Sympatex has already been offering an ecofriendly fluorocarbon-free DWR (durable water repellent) treatment for textiles since mid 2008, together with its partner Rudolf Chemie, a specialist for bionic textile finishing. Sympatex was a pioneer, being the first functional specialist in 2008 to treat functional clothing completely without components containing fluorocarbons.
